p.s. Holy Crap.

Moving. Moving in a few days. Signing a lease on Thursday. Moving into a house. It is a very very good house. I have a couple days off but cant do anything to get ready for the move until my workweek starts so all I can do is freak out and wait:)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Taste it again for the first time

Mango salsa I have always hated. Something in San Franciscos looong phase of mango salsas or chutneys with Tilapia in every damn restaurant irks me. I don’t want sweet salsa, mangoes should be appreciated with your open palm – nothing else. Last week we accidentally brought prepacked mango salsa instead of our usual pico de gallo. I may have tried to foist it on others. But today I finally put some on my veg burger and it was good! Spicy as hell! But good!

I have changed as a person clearly. Heh.

But what else can I do with this container of hot sweet stuff? I have the feeling cooking with tropical fruit really only goes with meats which I dont deal with much of.. Thai food excluded but I’ve been living off too many various stir frys lately.

DOY I have to make rice pudding with it. HELL YES.

Wherein I buy candy of all things.

Today I went to the pharmacy and bought gel insoles for my work shoes for $10. They were the budget kind but I don’t really buy into the advanced sectional thingamaroos involved in a cushioned pad for my feet. They will do me fine although I suspect the plastic feeling will make my bare feet slick. I was annoyed at the cost of …plastic jelly crap but my feet get very tired – A neccessary expense.

An unnecessary expense was the Lemon Zest wafer bar I spent $1.49 on. I left the house having made an appointment with a lady for a very nice apartment I want very badly and so I kinda started freaking out and fretting about money and decided to go for a walk for a Lemon Wafer. They’re surprisingly zesty and delicious.

I enjoyed the zest after eating the saltiest stir fry. I will edit the picture and post it tomorrow. It was a bowl of rice, fake chicken protein, the dregs of three different peanut sauces, miso paste, pad thai sauce, chopped sweet pea greens, bok choy and crushed peanuts. SO GOOD and I thought it’d be SO BAD.

and now I am SO LATE FOR BED. nite.

What I Bought – groceries, yawn.

I spent $22.82 in groceries. Bunny veg for the week and people veg for cooking. Nothing but veg.

At Berkeley Bowl it is possible to buy two full shopping bags full of produce for about $23. Heck yes.

People look at you funny when you buy 5 bunches of cilantro or parsley at a clip. It’s rabbit food but I wonder what they think I do with it.

Looking at my consumption – not the Victorian ailment

I am not a garish lady or a credit card user but I thought it’d be interesting for me to see what I really spend my money on. Most of it is surely food / bills but I’m sure way too much of it goes to nonsense like art/ office supplies and splurgy gizmos..

Case in point, bought five new pens last week, already have a full mug of working fancy pens. I just really like pens. Nothing really wrong with that but I could have used ten bucks to buy bunny food or a bart ticket. And how many ‘things’ do I really need anyway? It doesn’t really make me happy to come home having gathered more stuff.. but being as that’s a pretty normal feeling nowadays I wonder how much of that mentality I have.

Hey lookit the stuff I got!

chunky pasta sauce

no pics just wanted to whip this out before i forget. I like chunky veg pasta sauce instead of wet tomato-y Ragu types. Makes a more traditional pasta, goes with lots of pasta shapes, helps you use up veg that may only have a few days left and… more veg is always the way to go.

To make: Last night I had two giant zukes and a bunch of mushrooms that needed to be cooked. Chopped up and stirred over med with a Tbl of olive oil to cook down a bit. I added a third of a brick of frozen spinach to hold the sauce together like a binding agent, a tiny bit of lemon juice for the zukes (in case they really are a day away from going bad lemon will kinda perk them up. Like lime juice in day old guacamole) and a teeny can of tomato paste (not sauce).I shook in a bunch of thyme cause that’s nice in pasta and for potential sore throats like mine. Boil pasta. Combine. This made 4 or 5 servings of sauce but i wanted leftovers.

What’s also sweet about chunky is it’s very forgiving and transitive veg wise and you dont need a lot of pasta, it’s really a heavy sauce meal. Also the older or sensitive types in your life who dont normally eat red sauce because of too much tomato acid can eat this without complaint. Last night I did this with small baked potatoes on the side to round out the small pasta bowls. Holy crap I forgot how good baked potatoes are.

I know this is a bit random, i’m saving these food things for a reason. boop.

No more Chelsea

I’ve had my hair in a ponytail all day and night, haven’t been able to do that in ages. Yesterday I had to do a Walgreens run and relax my hair and today I’ve got juuust enough length for the tail. Finally grown from possibly the last Chelsea I’ll ever be able to get away with until I’m an old kook to a pretty raging Shag. Hurrah Shag. Best thing for me a Shag – I hate to cut / shape / style my hair at all. Waking up with your hairstyle in full glory preshaped is pretty wicked.

Yea, I wake up in full glory. A clamshell opens up and I emerge natural lithe and fancyfree. There are birds and lotus petals. Ukelele ballads have been written. It’s why I’m hot.

OK bedtime.

Not a big sweet person, want to be a pastry chef, go fish

Last Sat night around 2:30am I wanted cookies so I made a batch. As follows:

Preheat at 350 degrees, get out yer cookie sheets for 24 cookies.

Sift/ whisk around these dry ingredients.
2 1/4 cup flour
*1 Tbsp baking soda – you heard me.
1/2 tsp salt
a shake of clove spice. Just enough to cut the sugary sweetness to a mellow warm place

Cream the first three with a mixer well then add the eggs and vanilla.
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar – optional
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla

Pour in the dry stuff in two or three pours. Stop when just combined. Stir in the chips to not overmix

1 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Scoop out and bake for 8-10 minutes. My recipe here ensures no major spreading when baking. These are buttery and solid enough to come right off the cookie sheet after only a minute to cool. Eat until death sets in.

*This is probably twice as much as you’ll see in most recipes but I wanted a crackly crisp exterior and maximum inner chewyness. Which are scientific terms. It is science to put in so much baking soda, promise.

Salty dog, salty dog, I don’t wanna be your Annie doll…

Hot as a devil. Drinkin’ a big Salty Dog. Want one?

This is essentially a Greyhound with a salted rim. Freeze and salt the rim of your favorite weird cup, fill it with ice and pour 1 part Gin to 3 parts grapefruit juice. Or Vodka. Or you can be like me and use muddled honey mixed with the juice of a lemon plus a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.  I don’t keep grapefruit in the house much. Tastes remarkably close with gin and very grog-like.

Have you seen my baseball?

Here are some blurbs from lately, collected errata from leaving my browser open while I putter/ avoid housework.. Blurbs!

Lisa Frank is suddenly everywhere again! This para is for girls, not even young mo’s liked Lisa Frank..

So when I was a kid I liked the 80’s style Lisa Frank stickers. I liked the Ballet Slippers and Gumball Machine and Rainbow Heart on a Checkerboard Floor and Kittens in a Hi Top. The 90’s stuff is all dolphins and unicorns and now it’s all Fashion Girls in Urban Settings – superlame. Yes I am quantifying my Lisa Frank party here. I never said I was the coolest kid. Anyway, this stuff seemed to go into hiding after I turned 12 but now it’s everywhere and I have bought … 4 giant packs of stickers at this point. They’re only 5% classic images in this garish neon nonsense but I kept buying them this spring/summer. I am using them on my workout tracker calenders. That I make with markers and stickers …and construction paper. I am not a cool kid. Lisa Frank – at least it aint Ed Hardy.

Tie-in to working out. I busted my hip and can’t really run for a while on it without falling over/ imagining a hip replacement before I’m 30 so I’m back to the regular aerobics-y cardio. So boring but I can listen to the computer radio, get meditative and think about my day at least.. I plan on only two weeks more of this crap though, takes too long and I gotta marathon to train for;)

Tie-in to diligent training and tracking. Giovanni Cacciatore and I were in LA for a week and a half where I had two veggie corndogs at Hot Dog on a Stick and funnel cake at the Ventura County Fair. Never having eaten these things before I rate the corndogs  an 7.5 and funnel cake a 4. The funnel cake was not good, even it’s proximity to the 4-H rabbit barn couldn’t make it better. It gets a 4 for coming with a cup of pretty good coffee. Veg Corndogs get a heck yea, this is a gross fried food I can get behind. Any vehicle for ketchup and relish really.

When visiting my father last week he finally confirmed we both have green eyes. This was a thing in the past; he has always said my eyes weren’t green, making milkmans child accusations, etc. Then his wife said we also have the same nose. His nose is huge, french and has been broken twice.

I have a tiny normal nose from my real father, the milkman.

OK, rambling blather. Last tidbit: I suck at mini golf but of course rule at skeeball yet again.
